Pathetic. Lawmakers can extend tax breaks to big oil companies but not 13 measly weeks of benefits to the unemployed. We’re all under the thumb of a ruling elite.
WASHINGTON — The House has defeated a bill to extend unemployment benefits for Americans who can’t find a job. Democrats needed a two-thirds vote to pass a bill giving all unemployed Americans an extra 13 weeks of jobless benefits. They also needed that margin to overcome a threatened veto by the White House.
But the final vote on the bill was 279-144, which wasn’t enough. Republicans complained that the bill would give money to states that still have low unemployment rates. They also said the Democratic legislation would let people get long-term jobless benefits by working as little as two weeks.
