Spanish lorry drivers are staging a nationwide strike to protest against high fuel prices. Tens of thousands of them began an indefinite strike on Monday, blocking highways that threaten to bring the country to a standstill. “We are the ones who move the goods that this country needs to keep working,” Julio Villascusa, president of Fenadismer, the transport association federation, said.

“If we stop because we haven’t got the money to buy fuel then the country will stop.” Villascusa said more than 90,000 drivers are taking part in the strike. Analysts have estimated that if the transport strike holds, much of Spain will begin to run short of fuel and food by Thursday. More
