Bush wants 50 military bases, control of Iraqi airspace and legal immunity for all American soldiers and contractors

Independent
A secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely, regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election in November.

The terms of the impending deal, details of which have been leaked to The Independent, are likely to have an explosive political effect in Iraq. Iraqi officials fear that the accord, under which US troops would occupy permanent bases, conduct military operations, arrest Iraqis and enjoy immunity from Iraqi law, will destabilise Iraq’s position in the Middle East and lay the basis for unending conflict in their country. Well, I suppose Bush figures his popularity can’t suffer much from such a shenanigan. Such an accord, though, will definitely heighten tensions in the rest of the region.

Bush doesn’t care about popularity. He and his friends are laughing all the way to the bank.

I think, judging from W’s past actions, he’s also prone to a bit of “stomp my feet and hold my breath ’til I turn blue!” behavior. I’m sure he’ll particularly love being able to leave the dems something they can’t get out of.

Obama appears to have have already demonstrated [AIPAC speech] a willingness to accommodate Israel’s desire for control in the region, so unless it’s political posturing to appease Israel, he’s following the Project For A New American Century’s manifesto, planned years ago to dominate and control Iran, Syria, and the entire region.
